To keep High On Leather leather satchels, messenger, backpacks or leather duffel bags in the best condition and keep the beautiful vintage character keep the following in mind...
Natural Leather Bag Odor: Tips to Reduce and Eliminate
It's common to experience a natural leather scent with most suntanned leather-based bags for a week or two after receiving them. While some may love the smell, it can be overwhelming for others. Fortunately, there are ways to reduce the odor. Here are a few tips:
- Use Febreze Fabric Classic: Neutralize any smell with a few sprays inside the leather bag. You can find Febreze at most large grocery stores.
- Apply Baking Powder: Dust the inside of the bag with baking powder, leave it overnight, and vacuum it out the next day. Be aware that this may leave white powder marks inside your leather bag.
- Try Scented Oils: Put a few drops of your favorite scent, such as lavender, jasmine, or almond, on tissue paper and gently rub it over the outside and inside of the bag.
How to Deal with a Wet Leather Bag
If your leather bag gets wet, dry it carefully in a warm, dry area. Stuff it with scrunched-up paper balls to help it dry faster and retain its original shape.
Nourishing a Dry Leather Bag
After your leather satchel is dry, it may feel a bit rough due to the water. You need to replace the washed-out oils. We recommend using rapeseed oil to nourish the leather and help waterproof it.
Maintaining Your Leather Bag
To maintain your leather-based bags and satchels, use a sponge with vegetable, sunflower, or rapeseed oil to give it a light coating. Dry the leather-based satchel for a day in a room temperature airy space.
This may darken the leather briefly, but it will lighten up as the leather dries. Repeat this process every time you believe the leather has become dry or whenever you want to give your leather satchel extra care.
Re-Waterproofing a Leather-based Bag
While the oiling process during production of your leather-based bag provides good protection against the elements, you may want additional waterproofing. Here are a few ideas:
1. Collonil Leather Gel: Use this to provide your leather-based products with water resistance.
2. Nikwax Waterproofing Wax for Leather-based Products: Use this to waterproof leather-based products.
Fixing Scratches in the Natural Leather
All our leather bags wear well, and a scratch here or there only adds to its distressed looks. However, if an unwanted scratch doesn't wipe away with your own finger, rub vegetable, sunflower, or rapeseed oil with 100% cotton wool.
